Michelle Montjoy (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Oceanside, California. Her intimate embroidered textiles, whimsical drawings and ceramics and large scale knitted installations all consider community, connection and the tension of the present time. Her process is both thoughtful and playful. She strives to expand the realm of forgotten domestic textiles, reimagine used clothing into a sustainable material, consider stitched language as a launching place. She is also involved in numerous social practice projects, both on her own and with a collective called To Do.  Whether knitting on giant handbuilt looms, or mending clothes, the core of these projects is about offering space and time to gather community, share stories and connect.  Michelle is a recipient of a 2016 California Arts Council Artists in Residency grant and the Creative Catalyst grant from the San Diego Foundation in 2017. Her work has been exhibited at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Oceanside Art Museum, Lux Art Institute, Art Produce Gallery and others, and has public art works installed at San Diego International Airport and Liberty Station. She has taught and lectured widely in the area, served as a juror for numerous exhibitions and is the embedded artist with the Cultural Art Department for the City of Carlsbad, California. She has attended artist residencies at Painting’s Edge, IPark and Brush Creek Ranch.
